The Department of Management Sciences hosted a lecture by Dr. Goran Beckius from Stockholm University Sweden on Business Ethics

December, 2009: In line with Superior University’s undertaking for a ‘Faculty Exchange Program’, Dr. Göran Beckius, Director of Studies (former) Stockholm University of Sweden, conducted a Complete Course of Business Ethics (A European Perspective) to Semester 4, BBA students. The purpose of his visit was to educate our students and to coach our faculty members as well. Eight faculty members participated on this course and respective workshops.

Students enhanced their knowledge and exposure to international levels of Business Ethics particularly those who wanted to pursue their higher studies in Sweden. Moreover, all the students had the opportunity to learn the international guiding methods. Dr. Göran specifically focused on teachers training to improve their teaching skills so that they could go abroad and deliver lectures also.

In his series of lectures and workshops he guided students about current downfalls of the market due to unethical and immoral business conduct. In his point of view ‘business ethics is the study of business situations, activities and decisions where the issues of right and wrong are addressed. Business ethics as a discipline thus covers all aspects of the firm’s activities and any actions that affect the purpose of the firm’. Moreover he said, “Ethics has got a very important role to play. It’s not just ethical but also strategic for fruitful businesses”.

“Thus a good indication that businesses need to pay attention to ethics and moral rules is conforming to good practice and thus avoid confusion. Societies in general can be termed to have moral traditions. Firms are part of society. Thus they need to relate to moral traditions. Firms should act as good corporate citizens and recognize divergences in a global context” he added.

He stresses that “In all parts of our world religion plays an influential role. In some parts of the world it can be seen indirectly. Religious activities and beliefs vary in every society”.

The post lecture discussion revolved around the cultural differences between Pakistan and Sweden as well as differences between Pakistani teaching approaches and international standards.

With the help of Dr. Göran’s outstanding efforts, Superior University prepared a new course outline by following the international standard of education but also localized it with the blend of Pakistani Culture of our Ethical Environment.
